25 June 2025, Velana International Airport - Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been the single biggest driving force behind the development of the new terminal.
In a video message released on Wednesday, CEO Shareef credited the President’s direction and continued guidance in taking the project through its critical final phase. He extended MACL’s deep appreciation for the President’s leadership in shaping what will become a major upgrade to the country’s main gateway.
CEO Shareef confirmed that final preparations are ongoing for the opening of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), which will be in line with international protocols and operational standards.
“Our aim is to ensure a world-class terminal experience that reflects both international benchmarks and Maldivian identity,” said CEO Shareef. “Passengers will find a space that is efficient, safe, and designed for ease.”
The terminal will also incorporate advanced technologies to improve passenger flow and comfort, supported by expert input from global aviation consultancy team MODALIS on the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process.
Designed to handle 7.5 million passengers annually, the 72,000 square metre terminal introduces upgraded facilities, expanded capacity, and modern passenger processing systems. It will feature 47 check-in counters with locally inspired designs, six self-service kiosks, and 24 dedicated counters for seaplane travellers.
