Velana International Airport is the central airport for tourists visiting the Maldives. As the Maldives borders unlocked and resume the tourism in the Maldives from 15th July 2020, here at Velana International Airport, we are prepared to pick up again our airport operations to welcome the visitors to the Maldives.
Our utmost priority is as always to safeguard the health of our team and our passengers. Below are the precautionary measures we have implemented throughout the airport to establish a safe environment for our passengers and the team.
The departure and arrival passengers at Velana International Airport are expected to conduct Health Screening. To complete the Health Screening procedure, all the passengers and staff required to complete the online Health Declaration form before entering the airport.
Non- contact thermal screening or temperature checks will carried out for 100% of the passenger and staff at the entrance to the Terminals and the Arrivals.
To maintain public safety and physical distance requirement, tenia barriers and floor signage and information to passengers are displayed everywhere in the airport. The signage will highlight the need for passengers, and it will help the passengers throughout the screening process.
Apart from this, terminal seating will be arranged, blocked, or reduced to ensure social distancing of minimum one meter between seated passengers. Moreover, additional partitions and physical barriers will be set up to avoid unnecessary contact.
On top of seating arrangements, to ensure physical distancing, the passenger capacity is reduced, and social distancing markers are placed. Hence, the arrival immigration holding capacity is reduced by in total of 750 to 305 passengers. The passenger capacity of queueing in Hand baggage Screening is reduced by 43 passengers to 21 passengers. Also, the passenger capacity of the Baggage Collection is reduced by 450 to 232.
The capacity of departure entrance, Checking Hall, Emigration Hall, Security Screening area, and Boarding area are limted to a specific number of passengers to maintain physical distancing. Likewise, five passengers are permissible to pass through the security process at a time, and the number of queuing passengers in the Immigration is reduced from 145 to 72.
The number of passengers queueing in the Checking Hall is reduced by 1200 to 420 passengers to maintain the physical distance. Moreover, the passengers in the security screening area are reduced by 142 to 63, and the mumber of passengers stays in the Bording Gates are reduce from 1030 to 545.
Our VIP and CIP services will be available, with strict protective measures. However, prebooking is required to accommodate the facility. Adequate spacing (one meter) between the seated customers and the customers that enter and leave the lounge is ensured. Additionally, our staff will ensure physical distance while serving the customers and to avoid cross- contamination an unnecessary contact, our staff will work strictly with their designated work areas.
All passengers arriving and departing passengers and all employees at Velana International Airport are required to wear facemask. Passengers are advised taking extra masks with them when they travel, but they can purchase masks at the airport for a reasonable price.
All the frontline staff or staff working close to passengers ( without a protective glass barrier) wear a face shield to mitigate the risk of droplet inhalation caused by close contact with passengers.
Plexiglass sheets are placed in the counters such as Check-In counter, Immigration Counters, and Lounge reception to protect passengers and staff from direct droplets.
Hand sanitizers are available in all the areas, including Washrooms and waiting areas at Velana International Airport.
Frequent cleaning and disinfecting across the Velana International Airport will carry throughout the day. The frequently touched areas such as information desks, Check-In areas, Immigration and Customs, Security Screening area, Boarding area, Escalators, Lifts, and Handrails are disinfecting more frequently.
Moreover, the trolleys are disinfected when used by one customer. Disinfected trolleys and used trolleys are kept and marked separatly for users.
Apart from this, the baggage is disinfected before released on to the baggage carousels. Luggage will be placed on the conveyor belt at appropriate distances to facilitate the safe physical distancing for passengers when collecting the bags.

After consistent measures in our fight against COVID-19 Velana International Airport has received “Airport Health Accreditation” by Airport Council International (ACI). Our airport is the 2nd airport in the Asia Pacific Region to receive the ACI’s Airport Health Accreditation. ACI’s Airport Health Accreditation program assist airport by assessing new health measures and procedures introduce as a result of CIVID-19 pandemic in accordance with ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Task Force recommendations.
